Impulse and the Atom: Double Shot #1 (1998) is a humorous one-shot that pairs the hyperactive speedster Impulse with the age-regressed Atom, as they are accidentally de-aged into toddlers and must be "babysat" by the time-traveling Linear Men.

Story Summary

The one-shot, titled "Roll Back," ties into the temporary disbanding of the Teen Titans following the death of their teammate, Joto.

  • The Atom's Desperate Plan: Ray Palmer (the Atom) returns to his home of Ivy Town to reactivate an old "Time Pool" in his lab. His intention is to travel back in time to prevent Joto's death.
  • The Ivy University Field Trip: Simultaneously, Max Mercury is chaperoning his ward Bart Allen (Impulse) and other students on a field trip to Ivy University. Bored with the tour, Bart slips away to investigate an explosion in one of the university's buildings.
  • De-Aging Accident: Bart finds Ray at the time pool just as it malfunctions. The resulting time wave further regresses the age of the already-teenaged Atom and also affects Impulse, turning them both into toddlers.
  • Waverider's Babysitting Duty: The time-traveling hero Waverider senses the chronal disturbance. He arrives and brings the toddler heroes to the "Vanishing Point," a location outside normal space-time. While Waverider attempts to pinpoint the malfunction's origin with Liri Lee, he leaves the super-powered toddlers unsupervised.
  • Chaos Ensues: Naturally, chaos follows. The children manage to pull items and creatures through time, including a herd of velociraptors and Khund warriors from the 30th century.
  • Restoration: Waverider manages to correct the malfunction, restoring both the Atom and Impulse to their proper ages, but without any memory of their chaotic toddler adventure.
