Iron Man # 1 Marvel Action Hour 1994 comic book series (released in November 1994) is an adaptation of the animated series' first episode. The story features Iron Man and his team, Force Works, battling the Mandarin and his forces, who are attempting to create an army of radioactive "zombie" soldiers.

The issue adapts the animated episode titled "And the Sea Shall Give Up Its Dead". The plot details are as follows:

  • The Incident: A year prior to the main action, a Russian nuclear submarine is sunk by the villain Hypnotia, with all hands on board.
  • The Threat: The submarine mysteriously resurfaces near Scotland, its crew now transformed into radioactive zombie warriors loyal to the Mandarin.
  • The Mission: Iron Man and his superhero team, Force Works (consisting of War Machine, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Spider-Woman, and Century), investigate the situation.
  • The Conflict: Iron Man is ambushed by the Mandarin's disciples while investigating the re-emerged submarine. Force Works joins the battle using specialized underwater gear.
  • Mandarin's Plan: Tony Stark discovers that the Mandarin intends to use a green, slime-like substance to activate the zombie soldiers via a new underwater transport tunnel, the "Hammer Tunnel" in Great Britain, at high noon.
  • Escalation: The Mandarin summons the alien dragon Fin Fang Foom to aid his forces, further complicating the battle for Force Works.
  • Writer: Eric Fein & Ron Friedman
  • Artist: Anthony Williams

The comic adaptation is largely faithful to the source material, but features minor differences, such as the appearance of U.S. Agent and the Hex Ship. The first season of the Iron Man animated series itself took inspiration from the Force Works comic book series, which served as a successor to the West Coast Avengers.
