Iron Man # 283 August 1992 is a pivotal issue that concludes the "Masters of Silence" story arc. It is widely recognized for featuring Tony Stark in the high-tech War Machine armor (Model 11). 

"Put The Hammer Down!"

The story centers on Tony Stark’s final confrontation with his corporate rival, Justin Hammer. 

• The Assault: Tony Stark, utilizing the heavily armed War Machine suit, leads the Masters of Silence in an invasion of Hammer’s secret Pacific island stronghold.
• The Confrontation: Tony easily dismantles Hammer’s security, including a squad of Mandroids. He corners Hammer and dictates harsh terms for his surrender.
• The Resolution: Under threat of being left to the Masters of Silence, Hammer agrees to publicly exonerate Stark of fraud charges and sell Stane International back to Tony for just one dollar. 

• The War Machine Armor: This issue features the 3rd appearance of the War Machine armor (and the 2nd appearance of Tony Stark wearing it). While Tony is currently the pilot, the issue sows seeds for Jim Rhodes to take over the mantle later in the series.
• Tony's Health: Despite the victory, Tony's health is rapidly deteriorating due to a crippling nerve condition. His doctor, Erica Sondheim, warns him that the physical strain of the battle has significantly accelerated his condition.
• Preparing for the End: Anticipating his potential death, Tony begins putting his final affairs in order, including contacting cryogenics experts and arranging a new future for Stark Enterprises.
