Iron Man # 290 (Volume 1, March 1993) is a 30th-anniversary issue that sees a paralyzed Tony Stark awaken from cryogenic sleep and build a new, remotely-controlled "Telepresence" Iron Man armor to defend Stark Enterprises from an attack by battleroids.

Titled "This Year's Model," the story picks up after Tony Stark's body has been ravaged by a crippling nerve condition, forcing him to go into cryogenic suspension.

  • Tony's Return and Paralysis: Tony is revived by Dr. Erica Sondheim, but his nervous system is rewritten and he awakens to find himself completely paralyzed. He has enhanced sensory perception but zero mobility and is warned he might never walk again.
  • Conflict with Rhodey: Tony attempts to contact his best friend, James "Rhodey" Rhodes, who had taken over as Iron Man and CEO of Stark Enterprises in Tony's absence. Rhodey is furious that Tony kept his cryogenic plan a secret, leaving Tony feeling isolated and vulnerable.
  • The New Armor: Feeling defenseless and alone, Tony contacts Abe Zimmer, who helps him utilize a C.A.D.A.M. (Computer-Assisted Design and Manufacturing) system to build a new suit of armor that he can operate remotely using his thoughts. This "Neuromimetic Telepresence Unit" (NTU-150) is controlled virtually from his bedside.
  • The Attack: A group working for Morgan Stark (Tony's cousin who wants control of the company) launches an attack on Stark Enterprises with advanced battleroids, a tank, and an aircraft.
  • Remote Battle: Tony, from his hospital bed, pilots his new Iron Man armor remotely to fight the attackers. The battle is a challenge, as a second team of droids manages to slip away, targeting a defenseless Rhodey at his home, setting up the conflict for the next issue.
