Iron Man: House of M # 1 July 2005 is the first of a three-issue limited series tie-in to the House of M event. Written by Greg Pak and illustrated by Pat Lee, the story reimagines Tony Stark’s life in a reality where mutants are the dominant species.

The Best and Brightest Sapien

The story is set in an alternate world where the "House of M" (Magneto's family) rules Earth and "Sapiens" (humans) are considered an evolutionary dead end.

  • Gladiator Status: Tony Stark is the most successful human on the planet, serving as a billionaire businessman and a champion in high-tech gladiatorial robot combat.
  • The Secret Weapon: While Tony appears to comply with mutant rule, he secretly develops a powerful, familiar-looking suit of armor. This armor is kept hidden from the House of M, which uses Stark technology to oppress other humans.
  • Family Dynamic: Unlike in main continuity, Tony's father, Howard Stark, is still alive and serves as a primary champion in the gladiator ring.
  • Industrial Success: Tony operates Stark Industries in Chicago, where he is secretly working on the Vision project, an advanced artificial intelligence body.
  • Tony Stark: The "great Sapien Hope" who excels in business and arena combat.
  • Howard Stark: Tony's father and a fellow arena competitor.
  • Mutant Rivals: The issue features appearances from Johnny Storm (Human Torch), Hank McCoy (Beast), and Forge, who work within the mutant-led system.
  • Sentinels: Repurposed by the House of M to serve as enforcers against humans rather than mutants.
