Jacked # 1, released by DC/Vertigo with a cover date of January 2016 (published November 25, 2015), is the debut of a six-issue "hyper-realistic" superhero miniseries created by Eric Kripke (creator of Supernatural and The Boys).
The story follows Josh Jaffe, a neurotic everyman and family man struggling through an invisible midlife crisis.
-
The Catalyst: Feeling "invisible" due to a stalling career and a disconnect from his family, Josh buys a "smart pill" online intended to help him focus.
-
The Transformation: To his shock, the pill—a compound called Jacked—actually grants him superhuman strength, heightened senses, and insane bravery.
-
The Conflict: Josh decides to use his new abilities to become a real-life superhero. However, the issue quickly establishes the "Vertigo take" on the trope: the drug is extremely addictive, and being a superhero in the real world is grimy, violent, and humiliating.
-
Writer: Eric Kripke.
-
Artist: John Higgins (famed colorist of Watchmen and artist for Hellblazer).
-
Cover Artist: Glenn Fabry (Preacher).
-
"Deconstructed" Superheroics: Like Kripke's later work on The Boys, Jacked examines the dark and messy reality of having superpowers, including bloody thwarting of crime and a deteriorating personal life.
-
Addiction Narrative: A central theme is the protagonist's growing dependency on the "super-pills" to feel relevant and powerful.
