JLA: Tomorrow Woman #1, published in June 1998, is a one-shot special that expands on the origin and tragic short life of Tomorrow Woman. Part of the "GirlFrenzy!" fifth-week event, it serves as a flashback story set during the events of JLA #5 (1997).

Storyline Overview: "Tomorrow Never Knows"

The issue provides deeper insight into the synthetic hero's consciousness as she infiltrates the Justice League.

  • The Origins: Created by rival mad scientists Professor Ivo and T.O. Morrow, Tomorrow Woman is an advanced android designed to be a "Trojan Horse" to destroy the League from within. She is programmed with false memories of being a human mutant named Clara Kendall.
  • The Mission: While her creators wait for her to detonate a lethal electromagnetic pulse (EMP) to kill the team, she joins the JLA in a battle against the Sole Jurisdiction, an alien conspiracy using Earth's children as pawns in a global invasion.
  • The Conflict: Unlike her initial appearance where she seemed purely heroic, this issue reveals she was initially cynical and aware of her programming. However, experiencing the League's genuine compassion and witnessing the plight of the children causes her to develop true empathy, leading her to defy her creators.

Powers & Abilities

Tomorrow Woman's "four-lobed brain" grants her formidable psionic abilities:

  • Telepathy: Capable of reading minds and projecting a "peace bomb" to quell global rage with the help of Aquaman and Martian Manhunter.
  • Telekinesis: High-level power used for flight and firing destructive psionic blasts.
  • Android Body: Possesses superhuman strength, durability, and a hidden, self-destructive EMP weapon.
