JSA: Our Worlds at War #1 (2001) is a critical one-shot tie-in to the massive "Our Worlds at War" crossover event, focusing on the Justice Society of America's involvement in the cosmic conflict against Imperiex. Written by Geoff Johns with art by Javier Saltares, the issue serves as Part 18 of the overall storyline and is notable for expanding the JSA's roster with numerous classic reserve heroes to face a galaxy-threatening base.

Plot Summary

  • The Mission: President Lex Luthor dispatches the JSA to neutralize Imperiex's colossal battleship—a base the size of the planet Jupiter.
  • Calling the Reserves: To handle the scale of the threat, Sand (the JSA chairman at the time) calls in a wide array of reserves and allies, including Power Girl, The Ray, the Shining Knight, and several others from the Freedom Fighters.
  • Strategic Assault: Sand divides the massive team into specialized strike groups led by himself, Sentinel (Alan Scott), the Patriot, and Hawkman. Their primary goal is to sever the link between the battleship and Imperiex’s probes.
  • The Daxam Connection: The team discovers that the battleship is being powered by the planet Daxam. While Hawkman's group creates a diversion, the others work to free the Daxamites and disrupt Imperiex's communications.
  • Success and Sacrifice: Despite the "terrible secret" behind Imperiex’s power, the mission is a tactical success, with the battleship destroyed and the team managing to escape without initial casualties.

Key Characters

  • JSA Core Members: Sand, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Sentinel, and Mister Terrific.
  • The Reserves: Power Girl (making her first JSA appearance), The Ray, Damage, Black Condor, Phantom Lady, and the Shining Knight.
  • Villains: Imperiex, the embodiment of entropy seeking to reset the universe, and his mechanical "probes".
