Justice League #23.1: Darkseid #1 (2013) is an origin-focused one-shot released as part of DC Comics’ Villains Month event during the New 52 era. Written by Greg Pak with art by Paulo Siqueira and Netho Diaz, the issue redefines the cosmic history of the Lord of Apokolips. 

Plot Summary: "Apotheosis"

• The Mud-Grubber: Before becoming a god, Darkseid was a lowly laborer named Uxas. He lived on a world ruled by hedonistic Old Gods who treated mortals with indifference and cruelty.
• The Slaughters: Driven by hatred for the gods' arrogance, Uxas climbed to their realm and whispered discord into their dreams, inciting a massive civil war among them. As they weakened each other, he murdered the survivors and absorbed their power, transforming into the stone-skinned tyrant Darkseid.
• The Family Split: During the final battle, some of the Old Gods' remaining power was bestowed upon Uxas' brother, Izaya, transforming him into the Highfather. This event marked the beginning of the eternal conflict between the planets Apokolips and New Genesis.
• The Multiverse Hunt: The second half of the issue transitions to Darkseid’s modern-day activities, following his daughter Kaiyo the Chaos Bringer as she leads him through different universes to witness potential rivals. 

Key Characters

• Uxas / Darkseid: The protagonist and eventual God of Tyranny who seeks to subjugate all existence via the Anti-Life Equation.
• Izaya / Highfather: Darkseid's brother and his polar opposite, representing enlightenment and the leader of New Genesis.
• Kaiyo: A trickster "anomaly" who challenges Darkseid's absolute rule and acts as a bridge between universes.
