Justice League 3000 #1 (2014) launches a futuristic reimagining of DC’s premier team, set in the 31st century. Written by Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis with art by Howard Porter, the series follows genetic duplicates of the original heroes who are struggling with fragmented memories and incomplete powers.

Plot Summary: "Yesterday Lives!"

  • The Resurrection: In the year 3000, the genetic engineering corporation Project Cadmus uses DNA samples to "resurrect" Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, and Green Lantern. The project is overseen by the Wonder Twins (Teri and Terry Magnus), who are portrayed as arrogant and morally ambiguous.
  • The Conflict: The newly formed League is immediately thrust into battle against a member of a villainous group known as The Five. Their coordination is "rusty," and they struggle to act like a team due to their lack of shared history and original personalities.
  • Ariel Masters: The issue opens with Ariel Masters, the original driving force behind the project, fleeing from Cadmus agents in the slums of Bradbury Seven, hinting at a darker conspiracy behind the heroes' return.

The Reimagined Roster

These are not the exact heroes fans know; they are flawed clones with specific limitations:

  • Superman: A "swarmy jerk" who lacks heat vision and the ability to fly.
  • Batman: An arrogant control freak who frequently bickers with Superman.
  • Wonder Woman: Portrayed as much more aggressive and "warrior-like" than her modern-day counterpart.
  • The Flash: Lacks the "anti-friction aura" of the original Barry Allen, requiring an artificial suit to prevent him from incinerating himself while running.
  • Green Lantern: Does not have a power ring; instead, he is a living incarnation of emerald energy who must wear a special cloak to keep his power from killing him.
