Justice League: Endless Winter #1 (2021) is the opening chapter of a nine-part DC Comics crossover event centered on a global extinction-level blizzard caused by the awakening of an ancient villain known as the Frost King. Written by Andy Lanning and Ron Marz, the story weaves together two timelines to reveal how the Frost King was first defeated in the 10th century and how his return threatens the modern world.

Plot Summary

  • The Modern Threat: In the present day, the Justice League thwarts a bank robbery before being called to Greenland. There, Sebastian Stagg (son of Simon Stagg) has accidentally unleashed the Frost King while excavating the site of the former Fortress of Solitude in search of Kryptonian technology.
  • A Global Crisis: The Frost King's emergence triggers a massive, worldwide ice storm. His "Ice Horde" monsters begin attacking major cities, overwhelming the Justice League and forcing heroes like the Flash to race around the globe to save civilians.
  • Historical Connection: The issue introduces a flashback to the 10th century, revealing an "ancient Justice League" consisting of Black Adam, Queen Hippolyta, Swamp Thing, and the Viking Prince. This team originally fought and imprisoned the Frost King, and their past mistakes are directly tied to his current rampage.

Key Characters

  • The Justice League: Features Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash (Barry Allen), Green Lantern (John Stewart), and Aquaman.
  • The Frost King: A powerful ancient being formerly known as Edwald Olaffson, who gained ice powers in the 10th century and became a monster after a tragic loss.
  • Black Adam: A central figure in both timelines; he fought the Frost King in the past and is one of the few who understands the gravity of the return.
  • Supporting Cast: Includes Black Lightning and his family, as well as the 10th-century team members like the Viking Prince.
