Justice League of America: The Atom Rebirth # 1, released on January 4, 2017, is a prestige one-shot that reintroduced Ryan Choi as the Atom during the DC Rebirth era. Written by Steve Orlando with art by Andy MacDonald, the issue serves as an origin story for Choi's transition from student to superhero. 

"JLA Rebirth: The Atom" 

The story focuses on Ryan Choi, a brilliant but socially anxious physics student at Ivy University who becomes the pupil of Professor Ray Palmer. 

• The Partnership: Ryan works as Palmer's research assistant for a year. During this time, Palmer reveals his dual identity as the shrinking hero, the Atom, and invites Ryan to join his quest.
• The Disappearance: Ray Palmer eventually vanishes into the Microverse after discovering something that could "blow the whole Rebirth thing wide open".
• The Mantle: Ryan receives a video message from Palmer explaining his situation and a key to the lab. Ryan discovers the gravity belt Palmer left behind and, finding a surge of confidence, prepares to embark on a mission to rescue his mentor. 
• Ryan Choi (The Atom): The protagonist, a theoretical physics student with severe allergies and anxiety who takes up the Atom mantle.
• Ray Palmer: The original Atom and Ryan's mentor, who disappears into the Microverse.
