Justice League: Road to Dark Crisis #1, released by DC Comics on May 31, 2022, is a one-shot anthology that explores the immediate aftermath of the Justice League's apparent death in Justice League #75. The issue features multiple short stories from a variety of creative teams, setting the stage for the Dark Crisis event.
Storyline Overview
The issue is comprised of five distinct short stories detailing how various heroes and villains react to the absence of the core Justice League members:
- "Team-Up": Nightwing (Dick Grayson) refuses to mourn, convinced the League will return as they always do. He teams up with Superman (Jon Kent) and bonds with him over their shared legacy, helping Jon realize that avoiding grief is not healthy.
- "Life of Purpose": Wally West and Wallace West (Kid Flash) deal with the disappearance of Barry Allen (who vanished with Justice League Incarnate before the main League's battle) and an increase in supervillain activity, while trying to keep spirits high and maintain hope.
- "Survivors": Hal Jordan returns to Earth from a deep space mission and learns of the tragedy from Aquaman (Jackson Hyde), who is busy protecting Atlantis from alien parasites. Jackson tells Hal that the "younger heroes will need to step up" in the League's absence.
- "The Pariah": This story fills in the blanks on how Pariah was driven to contact the Great Darkness. Tormented by visions of his dead family and convinced of his destructive nature, he attempts suicide, but the Great Darkness intervenes, curing his delusions and convincing him he is the only one who can save the Multiverse.
- "Because the Night": Batgirl (Stephanie Brown) finds a bored Nocturna attempting a museum heist in Gotham. The two have a brief skirmish before admitting Gotham feels different without Batman. Nocturna is later approached by Firefly, who invites her to join the Secret Society of Super-Villains, who are planning something much larger than Gotham.
