King in Black: Return of the Valkyries # 1 (2021) is a tie-in to the "King in Black" event, where Jane Foster, as the last Valkyrie, must recruit other warriors to combat Knull's symbiote invasion. The issue explores themes of life, death, and the nature of heroism as Jane journeys through the afterlife with the soul of the fallen hero, the Sentry. 

• The Sentry's Soul: The story begins shortly after Knull, the King in Black, rips the Sentry in half. Jane Foster, in her role as the Valkyrie responsible for ferrying souls to Valhalla, finds the Sentry's spirit and comforts him. The Sentry (Robert Reynolds) laments that his heroic death was meaningless given Knull's continued rampage on Earth.
• Journey to the Afterlife: Jane and the Sentry, accompanied by the winged horse Mr. Horse, travel through a cosmic realm towards Valhalla. During this journey, they encounter the massive, corrupted corpse of a Celestial that had presumably been a victim of Knull's power.
• A Corrupted Path: The Celestial's body has corrupted the surrounding souls, turning them into a mass of vengeful spirits that attempt to claim the Sentry's soul. In a moment of desperation, as the Sentry is overwhelmed, Jane plunges her omni-weapon, Undrjarn, into the mass of souls.
• The First Valkyrie Revealed: Instead of saving the Sentry, Jane pulls out another figure: a forgotten, unnamed Valkyrie who had been trapped in her own personal "hell". This "No One," one of the original nine Valkyries, had been drinking away her sorrows and reliving the last moments of her sisters' deaths.
• A New Alliance: United, the "last" and "first" Valkyries fight off the corrupted souls, though they are too late to save the Sentry. The issue ends with the unnamed Valkyrie marvelling at Jane's powers, setting the stage for their team-up and the recruitment of others, such as Hildegarde and Dani Moonstar, to rebuild the Valkyries and stop Knull's invasion.
