Legion of Super-Heroes # 1 (Vol. 4), published by DC Comics in November 1989, launched the famous and controversial "Five Years Later" era. Written by Keith Giffen and Tom and Mary Bierbaum, this issue significantly shifted the tone of the series to a gritty, noir-inspired dystopian future.

Story Synopsis: "Five Years Later"

The story opens five years after the "Magic Wars," revealing a 30th-century universe that has drastically fallen apart.

  • A Broken Future: The United Planets is in a state of economic and social collapse. Earth is now largely under the covert control of the Dominators, who are conducting cruel genetic experiments on humans.
  • The Disbanded Legion: The Legion of Super-Heroes no longer exists. Its former members are scattered, broken, or in hiding.
  • Cham's Quest: The narrative follows Reeo Daggle (Chameleon Boy), who is determined to reunite the team. He travels to a frozen wasteland to find a disillusioned and bearded Rokk Krinn (Cosmic Boy) and convince him to return to action.
  • The Tone: The issue is famous for its dense, nine-panel grid layout and "text-heavy" world-building, using data files and news clippings to explain the complex political state of the galaxy.
  • Plot/Layouts: Keith Giffen.
  • Script: Tom and Mary Bierbaum.
  • Finished Art: Al Gordon.
  • Colors: Tom McCraw.
