Lobo #1 (2014), part of DC's New 52 initiative, follows a reimagined, leaner version of the character as he hunts down and executes the original "imposter" Lobo before embarking on a mission to stop eight elite assassins.

Story Synopsis

Written by Cullen Bunn with art by Reilly Brown, this series introduced a more serious and "cultured" version of the character, often referred to by fans as "NuLobo".

  • Reclaiming the Name: The issue opens with the new Lobo tracking down the "imposter"—the classic, bulky, 1990s-style biker Lobo. After a brief confrontation, he kills the imposter to reclaim his identity as the "true" Lobo.
  • The Mission: After the execution, Lobo is visited by a mysterious woman named Rhialla. She offers him a deal: kill eight of the deadliest assassins in the universe before they can eliminate their target, or spend his life in prison.
  • Target: Earth: Lobo discovers that the assassins are converging on Earth, a planet he initially views with disdain. The issue ends with him arriving on Earth and tracking down his first target in a warehouse, where he showcases his lethal efficiency.
  • Backstory Hints: The narrative includes flashbacks to the planet Czarnia, revealing that this version of Lobo was a former palace guard who may have been forced into "planetary euthanasia" after the royal family went insane.

Creative Tone

Critics noted that this series moved away from the satirical, over-the-top parody of the 1990s in favor of a more grounded, sleek assassin. While still ultra-violent, the tone is significantly more serious, focusing on the character's internal guilt and his past relationship with the Czarnian Princess Sheba.
