Martian Manhunter # 1 May 1988 is the debut of a four-issue limited series that significantly redefined J’onn J’onzz’s origin and psychology for the Post-Crisis era. Written by J.M. DeMatteis with surrealist art by Mark Badger, this series moved the character away from Silver Age tropes toward a more alien and tragic interpretation.
"Fever Dream"
The issue centers on J'onn suffering from a mysterious, psychic illness that begins to break down his perception of reality.
-
The Infection: J’onn is plagued by terrifying hallucinations of an amorphous black demon. During an incident in Gotham, he accidentally interferes with Batman’s pursuit of a killer, leading Batman to bring him to the Batcave for help.
-
H’ronmeer: The hallucinations are later revealed to be the manifestation of H’ronmeer, the Martian god of fire and death.
-
Psychological Break: The illness forces J'onn to confront the fact that his memories of Mars might be fabrications. He eventually flees the Batcave in a panicked state, lashing out at both his allies and his own visions.
-
The Origin Lie: This series established that J’onn's traditional humanoid appearance was a mental "compromise" he created based on Dr. Saul Erdel's expectations.
-
True History: It is revealed that J’onn was not just displaced in space, but also in time; his family and race had actually been dead for thousands of years before he arrived on Earth.
-
Ma'aleca'andra: The series introduced the native name for Mars as "Ma'aleca'andra," a tribute to C.S. Lewis's Out of the Silent Planet.
-
Writer: J.M. DeMatteis.
-
Artist: Mark Badger (Pencils, Inks, and Colors).
-
Guest Stars: Features appearances by Batman and various members of the Justice League International, including Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, and Captain Atom.
