Marvel # 1 (March 2020) is the first issue of a six-part anthology series curated by Alex Ross that aims to tell unique, character-focused stories by exceptional creators, framed by an overarching narrative involving the villain Nightmare.

The issue is an anthology, featuring several short stories linked by a framing sequence starring the villain Nightmare.

  • The Framing Story: Written by Alex Ross and Steve Darnall with art by Ross, the overarching narrative begins with Doctor Strange trapped in the dream realm by the dread lord Nightmare, who threatens the entire Marvel Universe by presenting the stories as dreams he controls.
  • Spider-Man Story: The first story, by writer Sajan Saini and artist Frank Espinosa, is an offbeat, raw tale about Spider-Man and his unique relationship with his webbing throughout his heroic career.
  • Avengers Story: The second story, written by the co-creator of the original Marvels series Kurt Busiek and drawn by Steve Rude, is a "Silver Age"-styled adventure featuring the early Avengers team (including Captain America and the Hulk) in a conflict within the Avengers Mansion. This story fills in a small gap in early continuity.
  • Curator: Alex Ross
  • Writers: Alex Ross, Steve Darnall, Sajan Saini, Kurt Busiek
  • Artists: Alex Ross, Frank Espinosa, Steve Rude
  • Cover Artist: Alex Ross

The series is a spiritual successor to the groundbreaking 1994 series Marvels, focusing on exceptional art and unique storytelling perspectives that capture the "human heart" and nostalgia of the Marvel characters, often outside the main continuity.
