Marvel Comics Presents # 49, published in May 1990, is an anthology comic featuring four stories, including the second part of a Wolverine and Spider-Man team-up, "Life's End: Child's Play", written and drawn by Erik Larsen. The issue also contains backup stories for Devil-Slayer, Daredevil, and the Shi'ar Imperial Guardsman Gladiator.

Wolverine and Spider-Man Story: "Life's End, Part Two: Child's Play"

  • Plot: Wolverine and Spider-Man continue their attempt to rescue a kidnapped father and daughter from a group of minor villains called the "Band of Baddies".
  • Hero Dynamics: Spider-Man is under the impression that the original Wolverine is deceased and initially believes his current partner is a clone or a look-alike. He also attempts to take a photo of Wolverine for his photographer friend, Peter Parker, much to Logan's annoyance as he wants to avoid publicity and maintain his cover.
  • The Fight: The heroes face off against the villains, including Critical Mass (the leader), Whiplash, and Bloodlust, in an abandoned warehouse. As the battle progresses, they discover the kidnapped girl has latent mutant powers.
  • Cliffhanger: The story ends with the villains making the young girl use her previously unrevealed powers to stop the two heroes, leading into the conclusion in the next issue.

The issue includes several short, unrelated backup features:

  • Devil-Slayer: In "Lost Souls", the final part of a four-part story, Devil-Slayer defeats the combined forces of the Flying Dutchman Ghost, Colonel McCloskey, and Colonel Ramirez.
  • Daredevil: The story "White Messiah" features Daredevil stopping a drug deal and facing a new villain named Scope, who possesses a radar sense similar to his own.
  • Gladiator: In "The Unbeatable Foe", the Shi'ar Gladiator battles a space monster. He eventually realizes the only way to defeat the seemingly unbeatable foe is to stop struggling and surrender, ending the attack.
