Marvel Comics Presents # 84, published in July 1991, provides the shocking conclusion to the acclaimed "Weapon X" storyline by Barry Windsor-Smith, revealing a major twist about the events Logan had just experienced.

Weapon X: Chapter Twelve Summary

The final chapter of the Weapon X saga reveals the truth behind Logan's rampage and his captors' ultimate fate.

  • The Big Twist: It was a Simulation! Logan's "rampage" through the facility in the previous issues, where he seemingly killed all the guards and scientists, is revealed to have been a virtual reality scenario. The Professor, Doctor Cornelius, and Carol Hines watch the simulation's end, congratulating themselves on its success and believing that the induced false memories will make Logan docile and compliant.
  • Reality Strikes Back: As the scientists discuss their observations, the real Logan, still in a feral state but beginning to regain some awareness, cuts his way into the control room and confronts them for real.
  • Escape into the Wilderness: The ensuing confrontation between Logan and the scientists is not explicitly shown. The story then cuts to Logan as he leaves the complex and wanders into the snowy Canadian wilderness, with the control devices removed from his head.
  • Aftermath: Cornelius and Hines are left to regret their actions and comment on how the project turned a man into a monster. The Professor's fate is left ambiguous, but the general outcome leaves Logan free to eventually be found by James Hudson and his wife, leading to his time in Alpha Flight.

As an anthology title, Marvel Comics Presents #84 also contained the final part of a backup story:

  • Firestar: The conclusion of a story titled "Life During War Time", featuring Firestar, written by Marcus McLaurin and Marie Javins, with art by Dwayne Turner and Jose Marzan.
