Marvel Knights: The World to Come # 1 released in June 2025, is the first issue of a six-part miniseries that reimagines a dystopian future of the Marvel Universe following the death of Black Panther, T'Challa.

The comic is set in a future where water is a scarce resource and global conflicts are brewing over advanced technology and secrets. The story is told in reverse time and focuses on the power vacuum left by T'Challa's death.

  • The King is Dead: The issue begins with the death of an elderly T'Challa, prompting a final tribal challenge for the Wakandan throne.
  • Succession Crisis: The main conflict is between T'Challa and his only biological son, Ketema (who is revealed to be white and blonde, a result of T'Challa's marriage to a non-Wakandan, Monica Lynne). Ketema is a zealot who wants to return to the ancient ways of Wakanda and challenges his father for the throne in ritual combat.
  • Global Instability: With Wakanda's king gone and its secrets unguarded, the world is triggered into conflicts as heroes, villains, and mutants vie for control of the advanced nation's resources.
  • A Dystopian Future: The issue establishes a dark, gritty tone, reflecting the original "Marvel Knights" imprint's style, where the world is limping along after past wars. The narrative is framed by an old rebel who recounts the history of the Wakandan lineage to a young member of the Dora Milaje.

Marvel Knights: The World to Come #1 (June 2025) primarily features the first appearance of Ketema. Ketema is revealed to be the son of T'Challa who defeats his father in ritual combat to become the new Black Panther and King of Wakanda in this future timeline.

The issue also includes the first appearance of other new characters and groups within this specific future continuity (Earth-TRN1711):

  • Aquamarines: A resistance group/faction led by an old rebel (later revealed to be Everett Ross, the narrator of the story).
  • New iterations of the Dora Milaje for this specific timeline.
  • Supporting characters such as Cleric "M" and an adult version of Monica Lynne (T'Challa's wife in this reality)
