Marvel Milestone Edition: The X-Men # 1 is a reprint of the classic 1963 original comic that details the first appearance of the X-Men, Professor Charles Xavier, and Magneto, along with the team's first mission against the Master of Magnetism.

The story, written by Stan Lee with art by Jack Kirby, introduces the original X-Men team (Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Iceman, and Marvel Girl) and establishes the core concept of mutants.

  • Introduction to the Team: Professor Charles Xavier, a powerful telepath confined to a wheelchair, has gathered a group of young mutants at his Westchester school to train them to use their powers for good and protect a world that fears them.
  • A New Student: The story introduces the newest student, Jean Grey (Marvel Girl), who possesses telekinetic abilities. The male members of the team (Cyclops, Beast, and Angel) immediately vie for her attention.
  • Magneto's Debut: Simultaneously, the powerful mutant Magneto makes his first appearance. He takes over a U.S. military base called Cape Citadel and threatens the world in the name of "Homo superior" (mutants).
  • First Mission: Hearing of the incident, Professor X sends his students on their first field mission to stop Magneto.
  • The Battle: The X-Men arrive at Cape Citadel and engage in a battle with Magneto. They must work together, combining their unique powers, to counter Magneto's control over metal. Cyclops uses his optic blasts, Iceman creates ice shields, and Marvel Girl uses her telekinesis to eventually force Magneto to retreat.
  • Conclusion: The X-Men successfully save the base and return home, establishing their role as heroes and protectors. Professor X congratulates them on a job well done.

The issue lays the foundational groundwork for the franchise's enduring themes of prejudice, civil rights, and the burden of being different.
