Men of War # 1 2011 NM-

, released on September 7, 2011, launched a new modern-day war series as part of DC Comics' New 52 initiative. Written by Ivan Brandon with art by Tom Derenick, the series reimagines the "Sgt. Rock" legacy by placing it in a gritty, contemporary combat setting. 

The main story follows Corporal Joseph Rock, the headstrong grandson of the legendary WWII hero Sgt. Frank Rock. 

• The Mission: Rock leads Easy Company, a team of ex-military contractors, into an unnamed war-torn region to rescue a captured U.S. senator.
• The Superhuman Twist: Unlike traditional war stories, this series takes place in the broader DC Universe. During the mission, the team encounters a mysterious, unidentified superhuman on the battlefield, adding a fantastical element to the standard military action.
• Backup Story: The issue includes a second story titled "Human Shields, Part 1" by Jonathan Vankin and Phil Winslade. It follows a pair of Navy SEALs, "Ice" and "Tracker," who are pinned down by a sniper while conducting a reconnaissance mission to blow up an insurgent ammo dump. 
• Corporal Joseph Rock: A skilled but insubordinate soldier who refuses promotions and carries the heavy burden of his grandfather's legacy.
• Sergeant Torisi: A tough, gruff commander who oversees Rock's mission.
• Easy Company: A group of elite contractors formerly in the military.
• "Ice" (Jonah Berg) & "Tracker" (Trachsel): Navy SEALs featured in the backup story who must navigate a high-stakes compromise in enemy territory.
