Mister Miracle # 1 1989 titled "Be It Ever So Humble," is the first issue of the character's second self-titled comic series (Volume 2). Published in January 1989, it was written by J.M. DeMatteis with art by Ian Gibson and focuses on Scott Free's attempts to live a normal suburban life.
The issue sets a lighthearted, domestic tone that contrasts with the New Gods' epic mythology.
- The Suburban Dream: Scott Free, his wife Big Barda, and their friend Oberon move to Bailey, New Hampshire. Scott is determined to live a "normal" human life, opening a fix-it shop to keep a low profile away from superhero life and showbiz.
- The Neighbors: Barda meets the Ferbels, their neighbors, and invites them to dinner.
- The Interruption: Their peaceful aspirations are quickly interrupted when the Apokoliptian villain Doctor Bedlam attacks Scott in his shop and drags him through a Boom Tube.
- The Cliffhanger: Barda and Oberon return to the Ferbels' house to find Doctor Bedlam already there, using a disguise to pose as a family friend at the dinner table.
- Writer: J.M. DeMatteis
- Artist: Ian Gibson
- Cover Art: Ian Gibson
- Series Tone: This series took a more humorous approach, placing the powerful New Gods in mundane, suburban situations, which was characteristic of DeMatteis' Justice League International run at the time.
