Moon Knight # 1 (Volume 6 or 8, depending on classification) was published by Marvel Comics on April 13, 2016. The critically acclaimed issue launched a new, mind-bending series that explored the reality of Marc Spector's identities.

  • Writer: Jeff Lemire
  • Artist: Greg Smallwood
  • Colorist: Jordie Bellaire
  • Editor: Jake Thomas

The issue opens with Marc Spector (a.k.a. Moon Knight/Jake Lockley/Steven Grant) in a mental institution, a reality that forces him to question his entire superhero career. The central theme of the run is the blurring line between Marc's mental illness (Dissociative Identity Disorder) and the supernatural influence of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu.

  • The Asylum: Marc is a patient in the facility, being told by staff, including Dr. Emmet (his first appearance), that his life as Moon Knight was a delusion he has had since childhood.
  • Khonshu's Call: Despite the medication and therapy, Marc still hears the voice of Khonshu, who urges him to escape the "prison" built for his mind.
  • Escape Attempt: Marc eventually attempts a breakout, using makeshift gear from his bed sheets, to fight what he perceives as an Egyptian-themed takeover of New York City. The reader is left questioning what is real and what is a manifestation of Marc's fractured mind.

The 2016 run is highly regarded for its introspective and psychological approach to the character.

  • Reviewers on ComicBookRoundUp.com generally praised the issue, noting how the art style changes to reflect Marc's shifting perspectives and the feeling of disorientation the creative team evokes.
  • According to critics, the series effectively managed to expand on the character's existing mythology while also serving as a compelling entry point for new readers, particularly those unfamiliar with his complex history.
