Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere # 1, released on June 22, 2005, is the debut of a nine-part comic book miniseries published by DC’s Vertigo imprint. It serves as an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s 1996 urban fantasy novel and television series.

The issue introduces Richard Mayhew, an ordinary Londoner whose mundane life is upended by a single act of compassion.

  • The Catalyst: While on his way to a crucial dinner with his fiancé, Richard finds a young woman named Door bleeding on the sidewalk.
  • The Choice: Despite his fiancé’s objections, Richard stops to help her and takes her back to his flat to recover.
  • The Consequence: This act of kindness effectively erases Richard from "London Above." He becomes invisible to his friends and colleagues, his identity and home simply vanishing from the normal world.
  • The Hunt: Door is a powerful noblewoman from London Below, a subterranean world of "misfit characters" who have fallen through the cracks of reality. She is being hunted by two ruthless, ancient assassins, Messrs. Croup and Vandemar, who murdered her family.
  • The Quest Begins: To reclaim his life, Richard is forced to descend into the dangerous, magical underworld of London Below and aid Door in her quest for answers.
  • Scriptwriter: Mike Carey (Lucifer, Hellblazer).
  • Artist/Cover Artist: Glenn Fabry (Preacher, The Sandman: Endless Nights).
  • Consultant: Neil Gaiman oversaw the project.
  • Colorists: Tanya and Richard Horie.
  • Letterer: Todd Klein.
