New Challengers # 1, released on May 16, 2018, is the debut of a six-issue miniseries spinning out of the Dark Nights: Metal event. Part of the "New Age of Heroes" initiative, it reimagines the classic Challengers of the Unknown concept with a new team of misfits. 

Following the return of Challengers Mountain to the DC Universe, a mysterious figure known only as The Professor recruits five strangers for a dangerous purpose. 

• Borrowed Time: Each member was pulled from the brink of death and is now in a state of being both dead and alive. They are given a second chance at life, but only if they agree to execute deadly missions in the most unexplored corners of the multiverse.
• Consequences: The team is monitored by hourglass-shaped tattoos that track their "borrowed time." Disobeying orders or attempting to leave leads to immediate death—a lesson learned early in the issue when one member, Spyral Agent Robert Brink, is "snuffed out" for testing the boundaries.
• The Mission: The team is tasked with uncovering powerful artifacts and exploring the weirdest reaches of the universe to prevent a reawakened space god from tearing reality apart. 

The new roster of explorers includes: 

• Trina Alvarez: An alternative medicine healer from Gotham City.
• Moses Barber: A hacker.
• Bethany Hopkins: A former paramedic.
• Krunch: A massive, powerful individual.
• Robert Brink: A Spyral agent who is replaced early in the issue.
