New Gods # 1 1989 launched the third ongoing series dedicated to Jack Kirby's Fourth World characters, picking up the narrative after the Cosmic Odyssey limited series.

The issue, titled "Hordes", centers on the ongoing conflict between the forces of New Genesis and Apokolips, which again spills onto Earth. 

• The Invasion: Kalibak leads an invasion of Atlanta, Georgia, in pursuit of Earthlings who have a connection to the Anti-Life Equation.
• The Protectors: Orion, Lightray, and other New Gods arrive to protect the civilians and clash with the Parademon horde.
• Darkseid's Plan: Despite the battle, Darkseid successfully kidnaps one of the Earthlings possessing the Anti-Life Equation and extracts the information, obtaining the secret of the equation for the first time in this continuity. The issue ends with Darkseid possessing the Anti-Life Equation in a crystal.
