Nightcrawler # 1, published in November 1985, is the first issue of a four-part miniseries that sends the titular character on a swashbuckling adventure in a bizarre, alien dimension.
The story begins with Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner) feeling a bit down and unneeded within the X-Men. During a Danger Room training session, he is practicing maneuvers with his teammate Kitty Pryde programming the simulations. He attempts to "rescue" Kitty's pet alien dragon, Lockheed, from a giant tentacle monster simulation.
- Dimensional Transport: Kitty and Illyana Rasputin (Magik) accidentally create a real inter-dimensional portal (described by Kitty as "The Well At The End Of The World") during the simulation, which pulls both Nightcrawler and Lockheed into an alternate reality.
- Swashbuckling Adventure: In this new dimension of "high-flying pirates, sorcery, and plenty of plundering," Nightcrawler quickly finds himself at home with his circus performer background and love of Errol Flynn-style derring-do.
- Pirates and Betrayal: He joins a crew of sky-sailing pirates led by Captain Long John McGurk. However, when the pirates attack a royal barge, Nightcrawler's inherent heroic nature kicks in, and he turns against his temporary allies, disabling their ship and rescuing their target.
- Sold into Slavery: For his "betrayal," McGurk captures Nightcrawler and Lockheed and sells them to a sinister, shark-faced sorcerer named Shagreen, setting up the conflict for the rest of the series.
The miniseries was both written and illustrated by Nightcrawler's co-creator, the late Dave Cockrum, who infused the story with the character's signature humor and sense of fun.
