Nightcrawler # 4, published in February 1986, is the final issue of the limited series, which brings Nightcrawler's dimensional adventure to a close and returns him to the X-Men.
The story, titled "Nightcrawler's Inferno," picks up with Nightcrawler, his newborn son, and the pirates fleeing from the relentless sorcerer Shagreen across dimensions.
- The Final Chase: Shagreen has captured the princess and continues his pursuit of Nightcrawler, using a dimensional-tracking spell to follow the hero across various realities.
- The Plan: Realizing they cannot simply outrun their pursuer, Nightcrawler devises a plan to use Shagreen's own tracking spell against him. They lead the sorcerer to a dimension that is inherently unstable and volatile.
- Confrontation and Defeat: In this chaotic dimension, Nightcrawler and Shagreen engage in a final battle. The instability of the environment causes Shagreen's powers to go haywire. The sorcerer is ultimately consumed and defeated by the very dimensional energy he was attempting to control.
- A Father's Farewell: With Shagreen gone, the princess is safe. Nightcrawler realizes he cannot raise his son while being an X-Man. In a bittersweet farewell, he leaves his son to be raised by the princess and the pirates in their now-peaceful dimension.
- Return Home: Back on Earth, Kitty Pryde and Illyana Rasputin's continued efforts with the "Well At The End Of The World" finally succeed. They open a stable portal that brings Nightcrawler back to the X-Mansion, where he is welcomed home by his relieved teammates.

The miniseries concludes as a standalone, lighthearted tale of swashbuckling and adventure, standing in contrast to the darker, more serious storylines featured in the main Uncanny X-Men title during that period.
