Nightwatch # 1, published by Marvel Comics in April 1994 (with a July 1994 cover date), is the debut issue of an short-lived urban superhero series that was a spiritual successor to the popular Spider-Man 2099 title.

"Sleepless Nights"

The series focuses on Dr. Kevin Trench, a brilliant scientist and physician who runs a community clinic in a dangerous part of New York City.

  • The Origin: The story begins with Trench witnessing the brutal death of a masked vigilante who looks exactly like an older version of himself. The dying man tells him to put on his suit and save a woman named Ashley.
  • The Suit: The deceased vigilante's suit is a high-tech, symbiotic costume with a flowing cape and enhanced strength, agility, and defensive capabilities. Trench reluctantly puts on the suit and becomes "Nightwatch".
  • The Conflict: He saves Ashley from armed thugs and finds himself immediately immersed in a brutal gang war, caught between powerful criminal organizations and a corrupt police department.
  • The Mystery: Trench is haunted by the mystery of the dying man who was his doppelganger and the woman he was told to protect, leading him to question the nature of time travel and his own future.
