Nomad # 1, published in May 1992, is the first issue of an ongoing series that follows the character of Jack Monroe as he establishes a new life as a vigilante in Seattle while caring for his adopted daughter.
The story, titled "The Favor Banker," begins with Jack Monroe adopting the Nomad persona full-time, seeking to fight for his version of the American Dream outside the restrictions of the government or S.H.I.E.L.D..
- New Home, New Mission: Jack has relocated to Seattle to start fresh. He is raising an infant girl he rescued, whom he calls "Bucky" in a poignant nod to his past as Captain America's sidekick in the 1950s.
- Vigilante Justice: The core conflict of the issue is sparked by the shooting of a young woman, which prompts Nomad to go after a dangerous figure named Umberto Safilios. Nomad operates as a "hired vigilante," taking on jobs that he feels serve a greater good but using methods that sometimes clash with traditional heroics.
- Captain America's Concerns: The original Captain America (Steve Rogers) makes a guest appearance, not entirely happy about Nomad's methods or his choice of lifestyle. This dynamic highlights the difference in their approaches to justice.
- Character Origins: The issue provides a brief origin for Jack Monroe, touching upon his history as Bucky and the experimental super-soldier serum that gave him his abilities but also caused instability. It also introduces new characters like Andrea Sterman and Giscard Epurer.
