Sabretooth # 1 (August 1993) is the first issue of Victor Creed's initial four-part solo limited series, which focuses on his capture and forced mission to hunt down Mystique. The issue delves into his traumatic childhood through flashbacks and establishes his complex relationship with the psychic mutant Birdy.

"Home is the Hunter"

The story begins in Sabretooth's mansion in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he lives a life financed by his mercenary work.

  • The Ambush: Sabretooth is attacked at his home by a group of ninjas from the Hand, who are seeking revenge for the death of their leader. He and his psychic assistant, Birdy, fight them off.
  • The "Glow" and Flashbacks: After the fight, Birdy gives Sabretooth the "glow", a telepathic treatment that helps calm his violent urges by allowing him to access and soothe repressed memories. This triggers flashbacks to a deeply disturbing childhood, where a young Victor is chained up and abused by his father, who even tries to remove his teeth with pliers when his mutant powers first manifest.
  • Betrayal and Capture: Later, while Sabretooth is asleep, Birdy disables the mansion's security systems, allowing a sophisticated assault team to gas and capture him.
  • The Tribune's Mandate: Sabretooth awakens restrained on an operating table, where a mysterious, armored man called the Tribune confronts him. The Tribune reveals that Sabretooth's surgeons have given him upgrades and, more importantly, implanted a bomb near his heart. He then gives Sabretooth 48 hours to kill the shapeshifting mutant Mystique, or the bomb will detonate. Sabretooth reluctantly agrees to the mission but mentally vows to kill the Tribune next.

Sabretooth #1 featured a silver or red foil enhanced cover.
