Saga of the Original Human Torch # 1 April 10, 1990 is the first of a four-issue limited series that provides a definitive history of Jim Hammond, the original Golden Age Human Torch. This series was created to re-familiarize readers with the android hero following his resurrection in modern Marvel continuity.

"The Lighted Torch"

The issue retells the 1939 origin of Jim Hammond with added historical context and depth:

  • The Unveiling: Professor Phineas T. Horton unveils his synthetic human to a group of scientists, only for it to burst into flame upon exposure to oxygen.
  • The Entombment: Deemed a menace by the public, the Torch is sealed inside a concrete block. While imprisoned, he is fed information through a device to learn about human language and global events.
  • Escape and Exploration: Oxygen eventually leaks into the tomb, causing an explosion that frees the disoriented Torch. He initially causes accidental damage before meeting a racketeer named Sardo, who attempts to exploit his powers for criminal gain.
  • Character Arc: The issue emphasizes the Torch’s "Frankenstein-like" nature as a sentient being struggling to find his place while being viewed as a monster.
  • Writer: Roy Thomas
  • Penciler: Rich Buckler
  • Inkers: Danny Bulanadi
  • Colorist: Bob Sharen
  • Editors: Ralph Macchio and Mike Rockwitz
