Secret Invasion Chronicles # 1 2008 VF+

Secret Invasion Chronicles # 1 is a comic that collects key prelude stories to the 2008 Marvel Comics crossover event, focusing on the insidious Skrull infiltration of Earth's superhuman community and the rising paranoia among heroes. 

The issue does not contain a single linear story but rather reprints three key tie-in issues to set the stage for the main event: 

• New Avengers: Illuminati (Series 2) #1 & #5: The story begins with the secret organization known as the Illuminati (a group including Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, Namor, Black Bolt, Professor X, and Dr. Strange). The first issue of this series shows their initial, aggressive encounter with the Skrull home world years prior, where they warned the Skrulls against interfering with Earth after the Kree-Skrull War. In issue #5, the group reassembles after discovering the body of a Skrull impersonating Elektra. They debate the extent of the infiltration, which leads to the shocking reveal that even Black Bolt has been replaced by a Skrull, who then battles the other members.
• New Avengers #44: This issue details the immediate aftermath of the Elektra Skrull's discovery by the New Avengers team. It explores the rising distrust and paranoia among the heroes, as no one knows who among them might be a shape-shifting alien impostor. Spider-Woman, secretly the Skrull Queen Veranke, takes the body to Tony Stark, sowing further discord within the superhero community. 

The comic explores the pervasive sense of paranoia and the question, "Who do you trust?" as the shape-shifting Skrulls execute a long-term plan to conquer Earth from within by secretly replacing key figures and heroes. It lays the groundwork for the full-scale invasion that follows, showing how the Skrulls managed to compromise the planet's defenses and pit heroes against each other.
