Secret Origins # 1, released on April 23, 2014, is the debut of an anthology series designed to clarify and update the backstories of major heroes within The New 52 continuity. The 48-page issue features three standalone stories, each focusing on a different iconic character.

  • Superman ("The Last Son of Krypton"): Narrated from the perspective of his two mothers, Lara Lor-Van and Martha Kent, the story emphasizes how being loved and cared for shaped Clark Kent's morality. It follows his journey from Krypton's destruction to his childhood in Smallville.
  • Dick Grayson ("The First Robin"): This story retells the origin of the first Robin, keeping the core elements of the Flying Graysons' murder during an extortion attempt at Haley’s Circus. It highlights the developing relationship between Bruce Wayne and a teenaged Dick Grayson, focusing on how Grayson chooses to celebrate life despite his tragedy.
  • Supergirl ("Kara Zor-El"): Reimagines Kara as being older than her cousin Kal-El, having spent decades in suspended animation while orbiting the sun before landing on Earth as an alien teen. The story establishes her heroic nature on Krypton, where she risked herself to defend others despite rules against interference.

The issue utilized different creative teams for each 12-page segment:

  • Superman: Written by Greg Pak with art by Lee Weeks.
  • Dick Grayson: Written by Kyle Higgins with pencils by Doug Mahnke.
  • Supergirl: Written by Tony Bedard with art by Paulo Siqueira.
  • Cover Art: The main cover was created by Lee Bermejo, with a variant by Andy Kubert.
