Secret Wars 2099 # 1 takes place in the 2099 domain of Battleworld, a dystopian future ruled by megacorporations, where an all-new team of Avengers 2099 operates as employees of the powerful Alchemax corporation. The issue focuses on introducing this new team and exploring their unique dynamics and the challenges of being corporate-sponsored heroes.

The story follows the newly introduced Avengers team on a mission to apprehend some high-tech criminals known as the "Chain Gang". During the mission, interpersonal conflicts among the team members surface, particularly regarding the behavior of Hercules, who is drinking heavily due to the anniversary of his wife's death.

After the successful apprehension, the team reports back to their employer, the CEO of Alchemax, Miguel Stone (son of Tyler Stone, and potentially the 2099 version of Miguel O'Hara). The issue delves into the struggles of the main character, the female Captain America, Roberta Mendez, who tries to maintain a balance between her heroic duties and her seemingly separate civilian life as a loving mother and wife.

The narrative ends with the Vision of 2099 warning the team's Iron Man, Sonny Frisco, about an impending threat from a rival group: the Defenders of 2099.

New Characters Introduced

The issue introduces several new characters making their first appearances in this specific 2099 timeline:

  • Captain America (Roberta Mendez): A woman with a split personality, one a mild-mannered wife and mother, the other a commanding superhero who is an agent for Alchemax.
  • Iron Man (Sonny Frisco): A tech-savvy hero working for Alchemax who receives premonitions through the Vision.
  • Black Widow (Tania): A skilled combatant who saves Hawkeye during the fight with the Chain Gang.
  • Hawkeye (Max): A new version of Hawkeye who uses a flying wing-suit for mobility.
  • Hercules: A powerful, but currently troubled, member of the team with a tragic past.

The comic sets up the conflict between the corporate-run Avengers and the incoming Defenders, exploring whether the ideal of Earth's Mightiest Heroes can truly survive in a world ruled by mega-corporations.
