Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings # 1, published in July 2022, is the start of a new series focusing on Shang-Chi as he grapples with the responsibility and corrupting power of the ten rings, which he has recently gained possession of.
The issue, titled "Absolute Power," begins with Shang-Chi attempting to return the rings to the mystical village of Ta Lo, only to find the portal closed. Deciding to store them in a secure vault, he is immediately confronted with a major problem: the rings' immense power has not gone unnoticed by the criminal underworld.
- Attack on Multiple Fronts: While on a date, Shang-Chi is attacked by Razor Fist, but this is merely a distraction. Simultaneously, a coordinated assault involving major crime syndicates like A.I.M., Hydra, The Hand, and others converges on the headquarters of the Five Weapons Society, the organization Shang-Chi now leads.
- The Power's Toll: Shang-Chi defeats most of his assailants, but as the battle intensifies, he is forced to use the full might of the ten rings. In doing so, he experiences a moment of intense anger, raising questions about whether the rings' power is beginning to corrupt him as it did his father.
- New Threats Emerge: The various criminal organizations are driven back, but the issue makes it clear that the "Game of Rings" has begun, and every power-hungry entity in the Marvel Universe is now a target for the rings.
- A Personal Mission: The main plot is intertwined with a B-story where Shang-Chi's former flame, Leiko Wu, appears with a mission to rescue their old spy ally, Clive Reston, adding a personal and espionage-based element to the high-stakes action.
