Silver Surfer # 1 (March 2014) launches a fun, "Doctor Who"-inspired cosmic adventure that partners the traditionally solitary Silver Surfer with a new Earth companion, Dawn Greenwood. The issue sets up a story where the Surfer must save a technologically advanced civilization from an existential threat while his new partner is taken hostage to ensure his cooperation.

"New Dawn"

The issue begins by introducing the everyday life of Dawn Greenwood and her twin sister, Eve, in the picturesque New England town of Anchor Bay. Twelve years prior, Dawn had made a wish on what she thought was a shooting star; a flashback reveals this "star" was the Silver Surfer scouting Earth for Galactus.

In the present, the Silver Surfer, a lone sentinel of the spaceways, is recruited by a highly-advanced, dimension-hopping planet/resort called the Impericon to be their new champion against a powerful entity known as the Never Queen.

  • The Motivator: To ensure the Surfer's cooperation, the Incredulous Zed of the Impericon uses a device called "The Motivator" to identify and abduct the most important person to the Surfer as leverage.
  • The Abduction: This person is identified as Dawn Greenwood, someone the Surfer has never officially met. She is abruptly teleported from her home in Anchor Bay to the strange, alien world of the Impericon.
  • A Reluctant Partnership: The Surfer is forced to become a hero for the Impericon to save Dawn, an innocent civilian, and the universe's future from the Never Queen. The issue ends with the Surfer resolving to fight while simultaneously vowing to return Dawn home, a task complicated by her spontaneous desire for adventure and to see the universe.

The 2014 series is notable for its lighthearted tone, sense of wonder, and unique art style, drawing inspiration from classic pop art and Silver Age comics.
