Sinestro #1 (2014) launched the first-ever solo series for the iconic villain Thaal Sinestro, written by Cullen Bunn with art by Dale Eaglesham. The issue finds a broken and exiled Sinestro forced to reclaim his yellow ring to save the survivors of his home planet.

Main Plot: "The Demon Within"

Following the destruction of his home planet, Korugar, and his subsequent departure from the Green Lantern Corps, Sinestro has entered self-imposed exile on a harsh jungle planet. He spends his days fighting giant white-centipede-tigers with his bare hands, having seemingly given up on his role as a leader and protector.

His isolation is broken by Lyssa Drak, the former keeper of the Book of Parallax. She reveals that her own body has become a living vessel for the prophecies of fear, with the legends of the Sinestro Corps now inked onto her skin. Drak informs Sinestro that his former Corps is being mismanaged by Arkillo and, more importantly, that some Korugarians are still alive and being hunted.

Driven by duty to his people, Sinestro accepts a recharge from Drak and suits back up in the yellow light of fear. They travel to a space station where five Korugarians are held in stasis by a religious group called the Pale Vicars, who sacrifice "emotional" beings to appease their anti-emotion deity. Sinestro rescues his people and massacres the crew before heading to the Sinestro Corps' base in the Formoire Belt to reclaim his army.

Key Characters & Villains

  • Thaal Sinestro: The protagonist, portrayed as a "jacked" and weary exile who is forced back into a position of command to protect his species.
  • Lyssa Drak: A major character who acts as Sinestro's guide and "author" of his new story, having transformed her body into a living Book of Parallax.
  • Soranik Natu: In the issue's final shock reveal, Sinestro discovers that Arkillo has captured his estranged daughter, using her as a bargaining chip.
  • Arkillo: The current leader of the Yellow Lanterns who has led the group toward a more brutal, disorganized path in Sinestro's absence.
  • The Paling/Pale Vicars: Introduced as the series' primary antagonists, they are a cult-like group that seeks to purge all emotion from the universe.

Creative Team & Reception

The series was part of DC’s New 52 era. Reviewers generally praised Bunn's characterization of Sinestro as a complex anti-hero but noted that the art by Dale Eaglesham depicted a much more physically massive version of the character than traditional, leaner interpretations.
