Sinestro Annual #1 (2015) uses a murder mystery among the Sinestro Corps to delve into the detailed, tragic origin stories of several key members, while setting up a greater threat to Sinestro's rule.

Main Plot

A member of the Sinestro Corps is found murdered on New Korugar, the planet Sinestro has claimed as his base and a sanctuary for the last remnants of his species, the Korugarians. As the leader of the fear Lanterns, Sinestro must find the traitor responsible.

To unravel the mystery, Sinestro delves into the backgrounds of several of his most trusted, or at least powerful, lieutenants. The main plot serves as a framing device for multiple short origin tales, showcasing the traumatic and often violent experiences that led each character to be chosen by a yellow power ring.

The stories include:

  • Lyssa Drak: Her past is shown as a young girl.
  • Arkillo: His history is revealed, showing him as a once-peaceful, faith-loving being who was driven to murder to be more like his god.
  • Rigen Kale: The story behind his unique, ringless connection to the yellow light is explored, rooted in the loss of a loved one.
  • Dez Trevius: His origins involve a forbidden love affair on a caste-divided world.
  • Bekka: Her background is also touched upon.

In the end, Sinestro already knows the identity of the killer and the murder is less important than the larger, looming threat that is revealed in the final pages, which sets up the future of the series. The issue expands on the mythos of the Sinestro Corps and highlights the severe, often dark, reasons why individuals are chosen to wield the power of fear.
