Sinestro: Futures End #1 is a one-shot comic released on September 24, 2014, as part of DC Comics’ "Futures End" event. Set five years into a dark potential future, it depicts a mutilated and imprisoned Sinestro reclaiming his power through macabre means.
Plot: "The Night, Both Fearful and Dark"
The story follows a broken Sinestro who has been incarcerated in the Tartaros Ultra-Max Penitentiary by the Apex League, a new intergalactic force.
- The Mutilation: Years prior, the Apex League attacked New Korugar and overpowered the Sinestro Corps. During his capture, the league blew off Sinestro’s ring finger to incapacitate him.
- The Escape: While in prison, Sinestro bides his time by scavenging parts from robotic guards. With the help of a fellow inmate named Natromo (a former Indigo Tribe member), he constructs a rudimentary replacement finger that can channel his fear-based powers.
- A Macabre Resurrection: After escaping the prison, Sinestro returns to New Korugar and finds it desolate; his people and his Corps have been slaughtered by a freed Parallax.
- The Ending: Led by the "shade" or ghost of his loyal lieutenant Lyssa Drak, Sinestro smashes her skull to find a Black Lantern Ring hidden inside. He dons the ring and uses its power to resurrect his entire Corps as a legion of Black Lanterns, ready to take revenge on the Apex League.
