Smallville: The Comic #1 2002 is a 64-page special "hybrid" issue that combines original comic stories with behind-the-scenes content from the hit WB television series. It functions as a bridge between the show's first and second seasons.
Comic Stories
The issue features two primary comic stories that expand on the show's "meteor freak" mythology:
- "Raptor": Written by Mark Verheiden with art by Roy Allan Martinez. After a teenager named Greg Fox is caught in an explosion at one of Lex Luthor’s excavation sites, kryptonite exposure mutates him into a violent, raptor-like creature. Clark Kent must intervene to stop him while Chloe Sullivan investigates the strange occurrence.
- "Exile and the Kingdom": Written by Michael Green with art by John Paul Leon. This story explores Lex Luthor's internal moral struggle. Lex faces pressure from his father, Lionel, to fire workers at a LuthorCorp fertilizer plant. After confiding in Clark, Lex chooses to stand by his employees.
Behind-the-Scenes Features
As a special issue, it also includes various non-comic features for fans:
- Cast Interviews: Exclusive interviews and photos featuring Tom Welling (Clark Kent), Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor), and Kristin Kreuk (Lana Lang).
- Season Overviews: Articles that recap the events of Season 1 and provide a preview of what to expect in Season 2.
- Production Insights: A look at the making of the pilot episode and a background story titled "Welcome to Smallville".
