Core Plot & Synopsis

Following the tragic events of Spectacular Spider-Man #200 (which featured the death of Harry Osborn), Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson attend Harry's funeral and try to process their grief. Meanwhile, at the Ravencroft maximum-security asylum, a doctor attempts to draw a blood sample from the serial killer Cletus Kasady.

The sample extraction inadvertently triggers Kasady's symbiotic blood cells, causing the Carnage symbiote to be reborn. Carnage immediately massacres the hospital staff and breaks free. During his escape, he recruits an ally—the sonic-powered mutant Shriek—making this issue her official first character appearance in Marvel Comics. Alongside an eight-legged Spider-Man Doppelganger, they set out to paint the city red, forcing Spider-Man to intervene.
