Star Trek #2, published by Marvel Comics in May 1980, continues the three-part official comic adaptation of the 1979 film Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Plot: "The Vengeance of V'Ger!"

Picking up where the first issue left off, the story follows the Enterprise as it enters the heart of the massive energy cloud.

  • The Probe: A mechanical probe from the cloud, known as V'Ger, appears on the bridge and kills Lieutenant Ilia before kidnapping her.
  • The Duplicate: V'Ger sends back a robotic duplicate of Ilia to serve as its "sensor-unit" and observer, interacting with the crew to understand the "carbon units" (humans) inhabiting the ship.
  • Decker's Connection: Commander Willard Decker, who was in love with the real Ilia, attempts to awaken the android's dormant memories.
  • Spock's Discovery: Spock steals a thruster suit and enters the interior of V'Ger alone, discovering that the entity is an enormous, sentient living machine seeking its "Creator."

Key Characters

  • Admiral James T. Kirk: Struggling to maintain command while facing the unknown.
  • Commander Willard Decker: Ilia’s former lover who becomes the primary emotional link to the V'Ger probe.
  • Lieutenant Ilia (Probe): The robotic double created by V'Ger to observe the Enterprise crew.
  • Spock: Driven by a telepathic summons to uncover V'Ger’s true nature.
