Stormwatch # 1, released on September 7, 2011, is the debut of a new volume published as part of DC Comics' The New 52 line-wide relaunch. Written by Paul Cornell and illustrated by Miguel Sepulveda, the series integrated the former Wildstorm team into the main DC Universe as a secretive, elite superhuman police force that has protected Earth from alien threats for centuries.
"The Dark Side, Part One"
Directly following ominous events from Superman #1, the issue follows the team as they operate on multiple fronts to combat cosmic menaces:
-
The Recruitment: Field agents Jack Hawksmoor, the Projectionist, and Martian Manhunter travel to Moscow to recruit two of the world's deadliest superhumans: Apollo and Midnighter. Apollo is initially resistant, leading to a brief clash with Martian Manhunter until Midnighter intervenes to forge an alliance.
-
The Himalayas: Team leader Adam One and Jenny Quantum investigate a mysterious, giant alien horn discovered deep in the Himalayas.
-
The Moon: Master swordsman Harry Tanner (The Eminence of Blades) is sent to investigate strange tremors on the moon. He encounters a giant, tentacled eyeball creature that warns of a malevolent coming threat and attempts to use Tanner as a host.
Key Characters and First Appearances
The issue features the first full appearances of several New 52 versions of classic Wildstorm characters:
-
Martian Manhunter: Introduced here as a "warrior" and secretive associate of Stormwatch rather than a founding member of the Justice League.
-
Adam One: The team's ancient leader, later revealed to be Merlin.
-
Apollo & Midnighter: Powerful analogues to Superman and Batman who join the team during this issue.
-
Jack Hawksmoor: The "King of Cities" who can commune with urban environments.
-
Jenny Quantum: The "Spirit of the 21st Century".
-
The Engineer: A cybernetically enhanced hero capable of manipulating technology.
