Suicide Squad # 1 2011 titled "Kicked in the Teeth," launched the fourth volume of the series as part of DC’s The New 52 relaunch. It established a dark, grittier status quo for Task Force X, written by Adam Glass with art by Federico Dallocchio and Ransom Getty.
The issue is structured around a high-stakes interrogation and flashback sequences.
- The Captivity: The story opens with the Squad members captured and being brutally tortured by masked assailants demanding to know their mission and who is "pulling the strings".
- The Test: It is eventually revealed that the entire interrogation was a "stress test" orchestrated by Amanda Waller to ensure the team would not break under pressure before their first real mission begins.
- The Origin Vignettes: The issue uses vignettes to show how each member was recruited from Belle Reve Penitentiary and fitted with nano-bombs in their necks to ensure compliance.
This incarnation featured significant character redesigns, most notably a leaner Amanda Waller and a modernized, more provocative look for Harley Quinn.
- Harley Quinn
- Deadshot (Floyd Lawton)
- King Shark (Nanaue)
- El Diablo (Chato Santana)
- Black Spider (Eric Needham)
- Voltaic (making his first appearance)
- Savant (Brian Durlin, who leaves the team early in this run)
