Suicide Squad: War Crimes Special # 1 is an oversized one-shot comic published on August 31, 2016. It is significant for marking the return of original series creator John Ostrander to the title for the first time in a decade.
The story, titled "Need to Know," follows Task Force X on a politically sensitive black-ops mission to Europe.
- The Mission: A former U.S. Secretary of Defense, George Carmody, is kidnapped by the vigilante group Strikeforce Europa to stand trial for alleged war crimes at The Hague in the Netherlands.
- The Objective: Fearing Carmody will reveal dark American secrets during the trial, Amanda Waller sends the Squad to retrieve him before he can testify.
- The Conflict: The mission is complicated by internal betrayals and external interference from the assassin Shado, leading to a bloody confrontation where the team must escape an allied nation while keeping their presence secret.
The lineup for this special issue was largely inspired by the 2016 Suicide Squad film roster:
- Rick Flag Jr. (Field Leader)
- Deadshot
- Harley Quinn
- Captain Boomerang
- El Diablo
- Mad Dog (a new recruit who serves as the issue's "red shirt" casualty).
- Writer: John Ostrander.
- Art: Gus Vazquez (pencils/inks) and Gabe Eltaeb (colors).
- Cover: Juan Ferreyra.
