Summer of Superman Special # 1 (released April 16, 2025) is an oversized 48-page one-shot that launches a major publishing initiative for DC’s Superman titles. The issue is structured as a single story in three acts, set against the backdrop of the wedding of Lana Lang and John Henry Irons (Steel).

Story Synopsis

The narrative, titled "The Past, The Present, The Future," uses the wedding to explore different eras of Superman's life while introducing a new cosmic threat.

  • Chapter One (The Past): Written by Mark Waid with art by Dan Mora. In a flashback to Smallville, a 16-year-old Clark Kent prepares to reveal his secret identity and his love to Lana Lang. Their moment is interrupted by the arrival of the time-traveling brute Validus. During the fight, Clark is sucked into the timestream, where he sees visions of his future—including his life with Lois Lane—before a "mental block" from the Legion of Super-Heroes erases the memory, causing him to stay silent about his secret.
  • Chapter Two (The Present): Written by Dan Slott with art by Jorge Jiménez. On Lana and John’s wedding day in modern Smallville, Validus reappears alongside a catastrophic "storm of the century". The entire Superman family springs into action to evacuate the town. After Validus mysteriously vanishes again, John Henry Irons vows to pivot Steelworks toward green energy and climate change solutions, and he and Lana marry amidst the town's ruins.
  • Chapter Three (The Future/Epilogue): Written by Joshua Williamson with art by Jorge Jiménez. Superman enlists Mister Terrific and Omen to investigate the time rifts. They discover that Validus wasn't attacking, but was actually terrified and running from a greater threat. The issue ends on a cliffhanger showing Validus being pulled back to the 30th Century, where Darkseid’s Legion is holding Booster Gold prisoner.
