Super-Villain Classics: Galactus The Origin # 1 (May 1983) is a special one-shot comic that collects and retells the definitive origin story of Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds. The issue details the transformation of the mortal scientist Galan of Taa into the cosmic entity known as Galactus.

The issue primarily compiles and expands upon the original origin story from various classic Stan Lee and Jack Kirby comics, particularly Thor #169.

  • The Dying Universe: On the advanced planet Taa in a previous universe (the "Sixth Cosmos"), a scientist named Galan discovers that his universe is collapsing due to a "radiation plague" or the "Black Winter".
  • The Final Journey: As the last survivor of his planet, Galan convinces a handful of others to join him in a spaceship and fly toward the center of the imploding universe (the "Big Crunch"), as a final, honorable act. Everyone aboard perishes except for Galan.
  • The Rebirth: At the universe's end point, Galan is approached by the Sentience of the Universe (later hinted to be the Black Winter). The entity merges with Galan, and they are both consumed by the collapsing cosmic energy, forming a "Cosmic Egg".
  • Gestation: The "Cosmic Egg" survives the Big Bang that creates the current Marvel Universe (the "Seventh Cosmos") and drifts inert for billions of years as the new universe forms.
  • The Awakening: Galan eventually emerges from the wreckage of his ship as Galactus, a being of immense power with an insatiable hunger for the life energy of planets. He builds his iconic armor to help regulate his power and begins his endless, cosmic cycle of consumption to survive.

The stories contained within are a repackaging of classic Lee/Kirby work, with additional material and arrangements.
